Targeted Ads might seem like a new term of the digital marketing era, but ads, and products, have been targeted since even before the Mad Men days. Our tools for feeding sellers information has just increased.

Nowadays rather than focus groups of 12 where researchers observe potential consumers through a one-way mirror during a small timeframe, followed by questionnaires of hypothetical purchasing decisions, nowadays you can actually look into present behaviors via indexing on their past actions.

My YouTube history's latest 20 videos is a tell tale sign of my current ambitions and curiosities. Who I follow on Twitter tells you what type of news-ey information I'm interested in. The people selling us don't always have this information directly, but they do have access to some version of it that they use to sell. Not even to just us the individual, but groups of us who share similarities. Consumer Tribes.

How many times have you been into something like Seitan only to learn that

, and I were getting into it at the same time. How many of us got into IPAs just at the same time as every other hipster from MSU?

Just like how things are magic until it becomes science, I think when it comes o consumer experiences we are all unique until data shows what tribe we belong to.

I think this has led to improvements into product/services offering because the creators/sellers can tailor it more. I can understand consumer's anxiety though. They feel like they are being known too well. Too understood? I have a reply for that too, but I'm going to hold off because
