Honesty

Honesty may be the best policy, but it is also a character trait of integrity and truthfulness. With honesty, there are no telling fibs.

My two daughters are the most honest people I know. I have never known them to lie to their mother or me, ever. It sounds hard to believe, but it is true. As children, whenever I gave them a treat such as ice cream, there was always one rule that they had to follow. They were never obliged to tell their mother that their father just spoilt them with ice cream, but if she asked them directly if I did, then they couldn't lie, and they had to tell the truth.

This simple honesty rule reinforced the importance of being truthful. It taught my girls that there is nothing to be gained by cheating and that when required to tell the truth, you should always do so.

Being honest is more natural than lying. You can rest more relaxed with your conscience when you are truthful, and you don't have to worry that you will eventually be found out.

Honesty starts at home, so teach your kids to tell the truth. It will become a value they will carry through life.
"If you tell the truth, you never have to remember anything."
