Be proud of your ruckus

Everyone has a unique perspective, which means that some of the ideas you choose to speak up about will inevitably be met with opposition.

You might mistakenly see this opposition as problematic and think that subduing your voice is the best course of action:

Never mind, let’s just do it your way.

Alternatively, you can remind yourself that you showed up to help make things better — not to be an echo chamber for someone else’s confirmation bias.

Your ruckus is nothing to be ashamed about, it is what you bring to the table to create the discourse and tension needed to get to our best ideas, work, and culture.

I never imagined associating you with ruckus.

Then I thought. Hey maybe that wasn't just a default. That was designed by Will. Just like a seamless UX -- think Apple -- is because of meticulous effort and reflection... maybe the seamless/ruckus-less Will is like that?

I wonder. Going forward will there be more ruckus? What would that be? I guess I have such a high opinion of you that I can't even imagine anything you stand for or say causing me ruckus lol.

Love the word "ruckus". Always been taught to be nice and polite, at the pain of not speaking up, but being able to own my ruckus and be proud of it feels empowering.

there will be more ruckus. When I say ruckus, I also mean being more assertive - firmly stating my opinions, speaking out, protecting my time/space/energy. Let's talk more about this Thurs - I can elaborate; would be curious to get your thoughts on where ruckus may be relevant to you too. Also I wrote a long response to you and

YES - I can relate. Recognizing that I've been raised to be nice/polite/agreeable & that I no longer desire to be that type of person was a powerful motivation for this post. As a 2nd gen immigrant that grew up with many other 2nd gen immigrants, I can say that this mindset of being quiet/avoiding conflict at all costs appears to be a widely encouraged character trait. I'm not sure about all the mechanisms driving this, but at least drive I imagine would be due to it being a good tactic/survival mechanism for reducing/alleviating conflict amongst people who do not take well to immigrants. This makes sense, but unfortunately I also think there are a lot of people whoa re quick to take advantage of this character trait. Creating a ruckus is about reclaiming our identity & place -- being seen -- by speaking up, holding firmly onto our values, and unashamedly protecting our space/time/energy is a great way. At least that's where it's at in my head now :)

if either of you are into hip hop, this has been my ruckus anthem lately: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRhRNgqPlyk

Bust this, I'm kickin like Segall, Out for Justice
The roughness, yes, the rudeness, ruckus
Redrum, I verbally assault with the tongue
Murder one, my style shot ya knot like a stun-gun
I'm hectic, I wreck it with the quickness
Set it on the microphone, and competition get blown

sounds about right, why that character trait is prevalent. Also something about cultural values I believe, because it's the same here in Singapore even though we're not minority.

Sorry about that character limit and the comment being deleted. I'll make it so that comments autosave just the same as posts.

I have a ton to say about second-gen immigration +  growing up a model citizen minority --> causing a drive for total ruckus. This week's call will be a good one.

I, too, like the word ruckus, and a 600-character limit without auto-save is unacceptable. Somehow, I had a sixth sense not to bury the best stuff in comments.

It's actually 6000. lol i just assumed Will wrote 600 as a typo
