Decline

With the salary cap and drafting, no one team can dominate the Australian Football League (AFL) over a long period of time. The competition is designed to ensure that the football talent is spread evenly and that every team can get a shot at premiership glory without having to have the deepest pockets.

Like the Richmond Tigers, premiership teams will inevitably decline from their peak as they retire, get older, and get injured. As a winning team, they will have the last pick at the draft for the best new talent, and so their playing stocks begin to tumble, and so does their form. Before you know it, your team are at the bottom of the ladder.

With three premierships in four seasons, the general opinion is that Richmond is towards the back-end of a dynasty that would see them drop off sooner than later. Many have questioned whether the Tigers will have the hunger to go again.

A premiership hangover is not that uncommon in the AFL. So it is not surprising that the Tigers are a little off their game at the moment. It will be a bump in the road, and I am sure they will bounce back. If not this year, then I am confident they will bounce back next year.
