With week one of the Olympic Games almost complete, Australia is sitting fourth on the medal tally, with eight Gold, two Silver, and ten Bronze medals. We love our sport, and we often punch above our weight when it comes to the Olympic Games.
We are always strong in the pool, where we have won five of our Gold medals. In addition, both the men's and women's coxless fours won Gold at the rowing. Nobody in Australia had heard of Zac Stubblety-Cook until he won a Gold medal at the pool in the 200m breaststroke. It's a name that we won't forget any time soon.
The Olympic Games allows you to watch sports that you wouldn't usually watch. For example, I participated in slalom kayaking competition as a teenager, so I enjoyed watching the Australian competitor in the women's C1 slalom win the Gold medal today.
Once the swimming finishes and the track and field events come around, our chances for Gold will diminish. This is because the track and field events are not our strong point. However, Cathy Freeman's Gold medal in the women's 200-metre event at the 2000 Olympic Games is recognised as Australia's most outstanding track and field triumph.
So, it's "Go for Gold" for our Aussie athletes, as there are more medals to be won.
