Queueing

Londoners always seem to be so civilised when it comes to waiting. If several people are waiting for service in a shop, they are quite happy to organise themselves into a queue. I think they have a saying in London, "if you see a queue you should join it".

In the antipodes, the art of queueing is atrocious. We mill around in a shop, jostling for position and pushing our way to the front, often paying little regard for the people who arrived before us. We do our best to apply the first-in, first-served rule, but we don't always get it right.

For some reason, delicatessens have successfully solved this problem by making customers take a numbered ticket when they arrive and serving customers in number order. It seems such a simple solution, and I am not sure why other shops don't adopt the same system.

For me, I hate to wait in queues. If I have to wait any longer than a few minutes in a line, I will leave. I don't have the patience. So, I will often go without, rather than wait in a queue for it. After all, life is way too short to spend my life standing in line.
