Dessert

December is my birthday month, and along with Christmas, it is the time of year when all the best desserts come out.

I have several favourite desserts, and I am never disappointed when a chocolate mousse dessert with strawberries and almonds is made. The chocolate mousse recipe for such a delicious dessert includes egg whites, cream, and Toblerone chocolate as the main ingredient. It is always delicious.

I also like apple pie, provided it has a flaky pastry crust. I would eat an apple pie with shortcrust pastry, but I would devour apple pie with flaky pastry. Cover it with thickened cream, and you have a great dessert.

But if I am asked what my all-time favourite dessert was, I would have to say it is pavlova. Pavlova is a meringue-based dessert named after the Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova. It is made from egg whites and caster sugar, and a well-made pavlova has a crisp and crunchy outer shell, and a soft, moist marshmallow-like centre, in contrast to meringue which is usually solid throughout. It is traditionally decorated with a topping of whipped cream and fresh soft fruit such as kiwifruit, passionfruit, or strawberries. But, I prefer it with cream and a crushed Peppermint Crisp, just like my mum used to make.
