Retro British sports car maker Morgan has revealed an all-new three-wheeler and, for the first time in history, it's built with a single-piece aluminium body. It will be known as the Super 3, and the existing 2.0-litre V2 motorcycle engine will be swapped out for a more efficient 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated three-cylinder from Ford.
The concept of the three-wheeler dates back to 1909 when H.F.S. Morgan's first car designed a single-seat three-wheeled runabout, which was made for his personal use. It has been manufactured by the Morgan Motor Company in some form ever since.
The new three-wheeler will be an aluminium "monocoque" construction, weighing 635kg. This one-piece assembly replaces the steel frame underpinning the previous wooden bodywork. Inside the waterproofed cabin, creature comforts include navigation, heated seats, a windscreen and door padding – with USB outlets fitted for the first time. A set of 20-inch alloy wheels are wrapped in narrow Avon tyres developed specifically for the Morgan, with a tread pattern visually inspired by classic rubber.
"A mechanical connection to your machine and an exposure to your surroundings. The sights, the sounds, the smells and vibrations. With every drive, your senses are heightened as you are forced to remain present and focussed. This is motoring, this is Super 3." - Morgan website.
