Compost

My family likes to do its bit to recycle when we can. We have diligently separated our bottles, cans, paper, and green waste into the appropriate council-provided recycle bin for a long time. However, when it came to food scraps, we were too happy to throw them in the bin and send them off to a landfill site.

Encouraged by our daughter, we thought it would be good to start creating our compost from the food scraps we disregarded in the bin. So, after acquiring a compost bin and some internet instructions, we got started.

Though composting is relatively easy to set up, it can take quite a while to produce an end product spread on the garden. You can't just throw the scraps in the compost bin. You need to turn it and add other materials, such as paper or grass clippings. To prevent the compost from smelling too much, we avoid adding meat and dairy waste. As a result of composting, we have reduced the waste we send to landfill and, indirectly, this reduces methane gas production, another benefit from composting.

Composting is not for everyone, but it is a valuable part of our home recycling.
