Doggy identification

Either of my dogs could make a run for it any day someone leaves the door open for them. And when this happens, I want to make sure that they can be identified if anyone else finds them. A microchip is a good start.

All dogs in Victoria must be microchipped before registration with the local council. This is why most dogs are microchipped before being handed over to their new owners. A microchip is a permanent method of electronic identification. The chip itself is tiny – about the size of a grain of rice – and is implanted just under the skin, between the shoulder blades on the back of your pet. Each chip has a unique number that is detected using a microchip scanner. The microchip number is recorded on a database registry with details about the animal and owner.

In addition, each of my dogs has a collar that has their name and my phone number embroidered on it. So if they ever get out, I can be easily contacted to reunite me with the escapee. The collar is a good addition, but when Louie made a run for it last year, his microchip was the one thing that reunited me with him.
