I made the mistake of letting some people know that I am a beginner at Poker. There seems to be a shift in how people play once they get that info.
Usually I try to avoid letting people know so they don't bully me into folding a good hand. But everyone who plays there seems to talk in a different language. Someone always asks me if I want to chop. Or someone is straddling. Or some other word that means absolutely nothing outside of the poker room.
At first, I pretended to not speak English so no one would disturb my intense concentration with their confusing words. Then I started to play deaf. Now I just look down and make no attempt to look at anyone's eyes so I come off as an dangerous player.
With every game I play, I learn something that I have to improve. Not showing my hand if I win, not celebrating a hand and not making any comments at all have helped me a lot. I have also realized that it is a good idea to fold often especially in the beginning when I have zero data about the players and their tendencies.
I really am enjoying playing poker.
