Went to the post office today.
As I approached the my mailbox I experienced a surge of flashbacks from 2013 when I found out my grandpa in Taiwan was dying:
I needed to fly back to Taiwan immediately but couldn't because my passport was still in the process of being renewed.
Once I received confirmation that my passport should be in the mail any day now, my dad would drive me to check the P.O. Box every day.
Eventually the passport arrived and I was able to fly to Taiwan. I had a few days with my grandpa when he was conscious, several more where he was unconscious, and then I held his hand while he turned cold.
As I stood in front of the P.O. Box today all I could do was think about how dad was now gone too, look at the flickering LED bulb illuminating my mailbox and wonder to myself: is that the same bulb that was here when dad took me to check for my passport?
