It looks like I will be eligible to get my COVID-19 jab next month, now that the government has agreed to start mass vaccinations for anyone over the age of 50 from the 3rd of May. This means I will get the vaccine earlier than planned.
Australia has two vaccines available, the Pfizer vaccine and the AstraZeneca vaccine. The government has had to alter their roll-out strategy due to a blood clotting risk with the AstraZeneca vaccine for people under 50. Therefore, with more AstraZeneca in hand, it makes sense for them to start targeting anyone over 50 for a vaccine. Even if I wanted the Pfizer vaccine, I'd have a Buckley's and none chance of getting it.
It is not that I have been chafing at the bit to get the vaccine. With no known COVID-19 cases in the community, I have been happy to get in line and to wait my turn for the vaccine. Many more people have needed it before me, so I have been happy for them to jump the queue in front of me. I will get my turn in good time.
1.7 million Australians have now been vaccinated, but there is still a long way to go.
