It’s important to be grateful.
The research supporting practicing gratitude is pretty compelling, but that’s not the main reason to be grateful.
No, the main reason to be grateful is because there are likely many profound aspects of your existence that you’ve come to take for granted and stopped noticing. And when you’re able to stop taking these things for granted, you rediscover just how lucky you actually are. And it is this discovery that allows you to savor and enjoy the life you have in ways that you weren’t previously able to.
For example:
If you have a sturdy roof over your head, you’re more fortunate than at least 20 percent of the world.
If you have the luxury of wondering and deciding what you’ll do today, you’re more fortunate than at least 1 billion people.
Even with the challenges you may be experiencing at work or with people in your life, if any of the previous statements apply to you then it remains true that you are a very lucky person compared to a sizable portion of the world who, by the way, would happily trade places with you.
