The gas station was well lit. It was off the highway. An old road that years before probably was something of a highway, but was too small so they built a bohemoth next to it.
There was a gas station just off of it. They sold all sorts of things enough for a snack. Part of him didn’t like to spend money out but always did for some beef jerkey. It had a lot of protein his mom would say. So it was okay to eat. He liked that and combined it with a slushie.
The lights in there he thought were bright too bright. Felt like he was a lizard or something under a lamp. Sausages spun on their circular treadmills.
That’ll be it? The guy at the front counter said.

3.40 then. You get up to anything interesting today? The guy asked.
The question triggered Pete. It seemed too specific too prying too much. He face turned red.
Uh yeah, uh I mean no just saw some friends you know. You? Pete said. Trying to be cool.
