Poor kid

Someone on Facebook drew my attention to a news story that a student in Ohio just graduated high school with perfect attendance since kindergarten. The Facebook post had the two-word comment "Poor kid." The following short exchange ensued.

BW: "I applaud him and his parents. #Teamstreak"
Poster: "Sure, sure... way to go parents, but they must be the most boring parents ever... I believe in going to school everyday, but C'mon.. sometimes things happen. And, all you get is a paper certificate."
BW: "He will have the lesson of a lifetime. Discipline."

Now, he's a parent with kids and I have no kids. But I did graduate high school with a streak of perfect attendance since ninth grade.

Obviously, that student wanted to go to school every day. Sure, his parents nudged him along when he was trying to get out of it (just like my mom did). If he really didn't want to go to school, I'm sure he would have devised some way of playing hookey, and there would have no shortage of compatriots in on the deception.

This student received way more than a "paper certificate." He's got a true life lesson of discipline. "Sometimes things happen" is too often used as an excuse.
