Remote garage door

I don't know how people cope with garage doors without a remote control to open and close them. When I built a big four-car garage ten years ago, I insisted that it have a remote control.

Most garage doors with a remote control opener are like any other appliance in the house, they require maintenance. They can get out of alignment, and the running rails can always do with some lubrication.

When the door maintenance guy came today, he said the motor is pretty tired, close to its end of life. He showed me how it was straining under the load of opening and closing the garage door, and he suggested it might just stop working any day now. However, he did say there is no need to replace it until it does stop working. Keep using it until it dies, he said.

Of course, he spruiked a new remote garage door opener, one he could supply and fit. An excellent German brand, he said, one that would last a long time. How much is it? I asked. He replied, $1,400 fitted. I do not doubt that the German model would be a high-quality unit, but at $1,400, it's expensive.

Time to do a little research on the options to see if I can find a cheaper model before my remote garage door gives up the ghost.
My "builder grade" garage door opener is still chugging along after 10 years. I did have to replace the springs, which broke a couple of years back.
