Olympics

Before I moved to the US, I watched the Olympics religiously. It was a big deal in all the places I lived before the US.

After coming here, I barely know when the Olympics were going on. Even worse, I can't find sports events easily unless the US is taking part in that specific sport. Particularly soccer. It is huge in Ethiopia. Actually it is big in most of the world. But not so much in the US. It has gotten better since the women soccer team did well but it is still not people's favorite sport. The world cup or the African cup could be going on and most immigrants have to go to obscure bars or house parties to enjoy the events.

Today, I heard that Ethiopia got her first gold medal in Tokyo. I didn't even get to see it live. There is nothing more boring that watching a long distance racing after you know the result. I was disappointed not to have known when it was happening.

Ethiopia is almost exclusively only in long distance running in competitions. East Africans are good with long distance and West African's are good with the short distance races. I hope to catch some of the action when the time is convenient.
Oh yeah, I grew up watching and always rooting for Haile Gebrselassie and Maria Mutola.

I guess only NBA and NFL lives in America… lol
