Luc Longley

The documentary series, Australian Story, has no narrator and no agendas, just authentic stories told in people's own words. Tonight they had a documentary on Luc Longley, the first Australian to play in the National Basketball Association (NBA), playing for four teams over ten seasons.

Australian basketballer Luc Longley played a significant role in the Chicago Bulls' second championship three-peat in the 1990s, recognised as one of the greatest sporting teams of all time. However, Luc was nowhere to be seen when the Michael Jordan documentary "The Last Dance" was released.

Though Longley didn't expect the documentary to feature him extensively, he did expect to be in it more than he was. His biggest regret of not being included in the documentary is that it didn't tell the story of an Australian making it big in the NBA.

In Australian Story, Michael Jordan revealed that he regrets that his teammate was left out from "The Last Dance". He said, "I can understand why Australia would say, 'Well, why wouldn't we include Luc?' And we probably should have".

Longley finished his basketball career with the Phoenix Suns and the New York Knicks, retiring in 2001 due to injury. He retired back to his hometown of Fremantle, Western Australia and is now a coach with the Australian men's national basketball team.
Good ol' Luc. I remembered wondering why we didn't see much of him in The Last Dance. I was unaware that he was the first Australian to play in the NBA.
