The worst nightmare in the mailbox

I am subscribed to the USPS Informed Delivery service. It is a free feature that sends me an email of the scanned mail that is scheduled to arrive in my mailbox along with notifications for any packages. I opened the email this morning, and when I scrolled down to the last image, I felt like someone punched me in the gut.

You do not want to see an envelope with IRS: Department of Treasury in your mailbox. Odds are it won't be good news. So the worst nightmare in my email inbox was transferred to my physical mailbox when I picked up my mail. I opened it right away expecting the worst--an audit. I've never been audited (knock on wood), and hopefully this is just some mistake with my return that can be cleared up easily. I opened the envelope as I walked back home from the bank of mailboxes near the park one street over.

The envelope included an invoice for taxes owed on my federal return for TY2020. My tax preparer was running behind and filed late on my behalf this year. I already knew that I owed them money, and I already paid the bill on the IRS website. This invoice must have been generated prior to my payment being applied. It sucks to owe taxes, but at least that's all this was.
