Maurice Junior

The Australian Football league (AFL) Draft is one of the equalisation strategies. It is designed to help lower placed clubs get first access to the best new players to build a successful club in the competition. The Draft rules include the father-son selection, allowiing clubs to draft the son of a past champion player. There is always excitement and anticipation with the expectation that the football genes of a past champion will be passed onto their son.

Maurice Rioli was an indigenous player from the Tiwi Islands in the Northern Territory who played for the Richmond Football Club between 1982 and 1987. Acknowledged as one of the greatest players of his era, Maurice had a significant impact on football and was a highly skilled and solidly built centreman with exquisite ball-handling skills and lightning reflexes.

In last year's draft, my team, the Richmond Football Club, selected Maurice Rioli Junior, son of the great Maurice Rioli, with a father-son selection. The name alone has the fans excited, and over the coming years, they will be expecting the Rioli flare of old.

In yesterday's game, Maurice Rioli made his debut for the Richmond Tigers. Though he did have a quiet game, he did kick his first goal in the AFL and looks destined to have a long career with the club.
