There is a deflating feeling when you watch your team fall from the dizzy heights of Premiers one year to missing the finals the following year. And that is, unfortunately, what is happening to my team, the Richmond Tigers. There are many reasons why this is the case, injuries to key players, a lack of pressure, and a pandemic. But, I think the main reason is that after being premiers, the team's drive to be Premiers again has diminished.
The Australian Football League(AFL) has made it hard for teams to stay at the top forever. So it is pretty common to see successful teams drop off very quickly after a period of high achievement. The Tigers are now over the top of the hill and heading down the other side.
There are a number of our senior players who are close to retirement from the game. Perhaps one more year will see them out, and they will hand the baton over to the younger brigade. However, I can't see us staying down for too long. We have a good group of young players and are positioned well in this year's draft to get more talent.
So, it won't be long before the Tigers will be roaring again.
