Family-unfriendly roadster

I am a massive fan of my two-seater roadster and enjoy a spirited drive when I can. It is an excellent handling little car, but with only two seats, it's no family car.

Many car manufacturers have made great sportscars with four seats. A case in point is the Porsche 911 which for almost sixty years has been a 2+2 sports car that can accommodate two people in the front seats and two people in the back seat. The 2+2 sports car is characterised by a coupe-style body, sometimes convertible, and a small amount of legroom for the rear-seat passengers.

I recall folding myself into the backseat of an Audi TT on one occasion. It was never designed for an adult. I had to lay across the back seat because I could put my legs down between the seats or sit up straight. It was the most uncomfortable ride I have ever had in a motor vehicle.

Some car manufacturers have been able to make a great 2+2 sportscar. There is something impressive about the compactness of the early Porsche 911. It is a fast car that seats a family and some luggage, and yet it's as narrow as a city car and as long as a modern Volkswagen Golf.

Maybe one day, Mazda might think of making a 2+2 version of the MX-5. Unfortunately, I don't think they will, so I will have to stay with my family-unfriendly roadster.

That sounds totally fine for me, as long as you have a second (family-friendly) car.

How often do you ride it and who do you ride it with ?

We do have a second family car, an SUV.
Over the summer, my wife and I get out in the cooler evening air for a drive. Spring has started, and we are hoping to be out of lockdown for summer.
