The roadster to buy

The fact the current model of the Mazda MX-5 is over five years old doesn't seem to bother customers, as it's selling better than ever in Australia.

For the calendar year, up until the end of August 2021, 550 new MX-5s were sold, representing a 96.4 per cent increase over the same period in 2020, or nearly double. What's more interesting is that the Mazda MX-5 isn't attracting newcomers but instead appealing more to the same buyer pool. As a result, the Mazda MX-5 has doubled its market share, a feat more remarkable than the sales increase alone.

And it is not only the newer Mazda MX-5s that are selling. Early model Mazda MX-5s are demanding good money. This is because vehicles over 25 years of age are eligible in Victoria for a Club Permit, a discounted registration scheme for historic cars. Now that the earlier models are becoming popular, the price of them has also gone up.

The Mazda MX-5 is a pretty well-rounded little sports car. It offers sophisticated styling, elegant interior features, and a sporty drive, all for an attractive price. As a result, it remains the vehicle to buy if you want an entry-level roadster with exceptional handling capabilities.
