“Stick and stones may break me, but words will never harm me.”

I’ve always wondered why that saying is popular. Because it isn’t true. Words harm. I remember as a kid, I’d rather be spanked than insulted. 

But the saying when situated in its context, makes sense. It’s a statement used to shrug off jeers and verbal bullying. 

Once again, context is king.
