Scope creep

Over the past year, we have been renovating our twenty-year-old house. So we thought a refresh of the bathrooms, a lick of paint, and some new furnishing should about do it. To start the project, we engaged Dorothy, the interior designer, to help us with the design and colour decor, as we have worked with her before and have been happy with her advice.

An interior designer can be constructive in bringing all the pieces together to get a nice new fresh look to the house. The problem is that they can't help themselves, and before you know it, you are now looking at doing up the laundry, bedrooms, and while you are at it, why not do the kitchen.

Dorothy had some suggestions on renovating the kitchen. No significant changes, but a few to freshen it up. She said that if we are going to paint the kitchen, it might be helpful to reskin the kitchen cupboards. She added that you don't want to come back and redo the floors and painting if you decide later to do the kitchen cupboards.

The scope creep doubled the budget on the project. However, we always see more things that need doing, and we have been quite willing to extend the budget to accommodate them. We feared we might be disappointed if we didn't do the additional items.

Now that the project finished, we are delighted with the result.
