The Other Side of Dubai

Today is day 4 of my Dubai vacation.
Actually - the first day where I didn't have any conference to go to. A few people I met at the conference wanted to meetup in a local place but I had already made prior plans.

Today was the day I wanted to see the Ethiopian rich area and eat at an Ethiopian restaurant. So yesterday, I googled - 'the best Ethiopian restaurant in Dubai'. The top result was one named Al Habesha. It had great reviews so it was selected.

I didn't know where exactly it was located but since it was just 20 minutes from the hotel, I didn't think much of it. Turns out it is a totally different area of Dubai. The one without any sky scrapers. Where you saw the local people. There were mom and pop shops everywhere. I saw at east 15 Ethiopian stores in one area. And every other person was speaking the Ethiopian language. I really felt like I was back home. This is the closest I have gone to being near Ethiopia.

The interesting thing was that the restaurant I selected was closed. it went out of business a while back. Someone forgot to update Google about that. But since there were a lot of Ethiopians in the area, I asked them for the restaurant they recommend. A few steps away, there was one tiny looking place that was packed with Ethiopians. I knew that had to be the authentic place.

I placed my order along with my friend for 3 main dishes and vege sides. It cost us 150 AED. 1 dollar is 3.6 AED... so our meal in $$ was $41. It was a lot of food. Authentic and delicious. it was enough for 2-3 meals.

I liked today's adventures. I want to try out the metro next. I heard it is one of the best in the world. The vacation continues...
