Poker - 2

What I have learnt in my short 1 month career as a poker player is the following:

1. Poker is a more real life scenario type of game than most things out there. The uncertainty, the variables, the multiple decision making opportunities and immediate consequences makes it more real life type of thing.

2. Poker allows anyone - regardless of intelligence to experience many types of bias. Due to the level of uncertainty each hand allows, a lot of us want to inflate our intelligence/skill over luck which is also present in abundance in poker. Reading the book - 'thinking in bets' allowed me to see how common the biases are among players.

3. Kenny Rogers song - You got to know when to fold - makes so much sense now. I was the type of person who never wanted to fold my hand. My thinking was - if only I see the three cards that are revealed, I could win every hand. I didn't know when to fold and why I should fold.

4. Brandon mentioned this in a comment and I totally agree. Playing with fake money online is nothing like playing in person with real consequences. That reminded me how differently a person that is running his own business VS working a 9-5 treats their time at the job. I remember the first time I went to play in person. I could hear my heart beating when the pot was barely $10.

5. There is a lot of bullying in poker. Maybe it is my perception but I find people doing a lot of staring hard or talking trash at the poker table than I am used to. It is mostly men so maybe that's how men talk to each other. I am too busy thinking about so many factors that I refuse to engage in any banter or chit chat? I thought it was women who can multitask better but I am unable to do so at the poker table. I would actually prefer if everyone would just be quiet so I can think better.

6. If you understand decision making and psychology - it is possible to become a better poker player. I am excited at the prospect of getting better. Mainly because I have always wanted to get better at decision making and second because I have been told I don't have a poker face so would never do well in the game.

That's all folks.
