Today is Easter Sunday for Ethiopians. And other countries that have had historically a large population of Orthodox Christians. Our Easter is off by a week or two. Christmas is on Jan 7th.
I have asked about the reasons why it is different from majority of the world celebrates on another day. I never got an answer that made much sense to me.... but regardless, it is a day of family, food, celebrations - much like thanksgiving in the US.
The best part is for the kids. They get two days of Christmas and two days of Easter to have fun.
For Ethiopians, Easter is a more intense festival than any other religious holiday. Most people would eat a vegan diet for about 2 months before Easter Sunday. So when on Easter, most people get sick due to the excess meat, dairy, butter and dessert.
Today was different for me. I stuck with my restricted diet. Made my own food and stayed away from temptation. Didn't feel like a festival at all. I am surprised how much I associate junk food with celebrations. Maybe I need to come up with some festival related recipes.
