You don’t have to use the light

The word “light” is largely used in Nigeria to refer to power supply. Broken English.

There’s no light = no power supply at the moment.

They have brought light = power have been restored.

Growing up in a country with erratic power supply you tend to want to make the most of it when it’s available.

Lamps to charge, Meals to cook so you don’t use gas, devices to charge, TV to watch etc

You just want to use the light.

There’s a benefit to that as it teaches you efficiency.

However, it teaches your brain to always want to use the light whenever it’s available. That’s a horrible way to live.

I don’t want to stop reading this great book because light just came on so I can watch TV. I don’t want to stop what I’m doing so I can cook my next meal because there’s light. I don’t want to think I have to use the light just because I don’t know when next I’ll have it when it’s taken.

Perhaps I’m just being too idealistic, but really, I don’t have to use the light.

Unencumbered.
