Passing the torch

This week is the last week before the new configuration manager arrives on Monday. The director and I have a call with him on Friday to touch base before he officially starts on Monday.

My client has always had a very small configuration team (1-2 FTEs and usually several consultants). It's amazing that they made it as far as they have without someone in the role to help grow the department. I stepped into the role as a consultant in July of 2019, but the first year was "wasted" on managing a very large system upgrade. It wasn't until the second year when I was able to focus on what the department needs.

My tenure in this role is coming to an end, and it will be time to pass the torch. The person who is starting has deep knowledge and experience and aside from me, they really couldn't have found anyone else who is a better fit for the role. Why didn't I take the permanent gig? Well, I would have to move to California, for one. It's a nice place to visit, but I will pass on moving to Silicon Valley.

Starting next week, it will be what I refer to as a "two-headed monster" as I get the new guy up to speed.
