Getting a pet

This past weekend, my brother and I went puppy shopping. Neither of us have any experience with it so it we just googled pet smart and went to the closest one.

We were told by a cashier that they do not sell any puppies. So we did another google search and found one called - "my next puppy". That was a clear enough business name so we made the 45 minute drive into Virginia.

The place was in a strip mall and parking wasn't an issue. When we got to the door, an older man came out of the center and asked us if we had an appointment. We said no. He told us that they only work with appointments. Then my brother asked if we could make an appointment for right now. The man shook his head and said that they are fully booked. We were very surprised at that. Then the man said that if we had our mind set on buying one for tonight, he would see what he could do.

When the man went back inside, I told my brother that the man was using the sales script to the T. I had just read about this exclusive offer trick that is used to make a sale. And as predicted, the man returned and said we were lucky that someone had a cancelation.

Then he took us inside something like a cubicle. And showed us the breed that my bother was interested in. After some unnecessary details, we asked for the price. The man said $9,950. I was shocked. And so was my brother. We hadn't done any research but I didn't expect it to cost as much as a car would. Immediately, the man went into financing and warranty and such. But I had checked out. It made no sense to spend that kind of money. At least that wasn't what I thought we were setting out to do.

So we declined the offer and stepped out. I asked my brother what he was prepared to pay for a pet. He said he thought it would be a hundred or two. We had so much to learn before another trip like this.
