That suit was strong for sure. Must workout more than someone who works out. I had told myself that I would workout for years. But I spent all my free time eating cheetos and reading about celebrities instead. One time I was reading about the morning routines of different scientists, artists, business people, and rappers. I thought a lot of these people I'd get along with. I fancied that about myself. That anybody could like me. But now here I was. Handcuffed. Bound in the back of a large Suburban.
"You know this is illegal," I said.
The suit who neutralized me was driving. The less strong but more suit looked back at me. He didn't have a watch on, but he looked like a guy who would wear a watch. He had a perfectly shaped skull that was accentuated by his haircut, which was a completely shaved head.
"The rules don't apply to us."
I wanted to ask, "what do you mean the rules don't apply" but I didn't dare ask.
"You're probably wondering who we are."
I found myself nodding.
"You don't need to know that. Even if you were to learn who we are, it would be details on paper. I can tell you who we are on paper. We are government contractors. But there's a lot of those, and nobody really can tell what a lot of us do. So don't worry. Just know that the rules don't apply to us. You can call your lawyer later if you want."
"Okay."
"But let me tell you. You won't know what to ask your lawyer for."
The hummed. The outside world contained outside of it. Few moments passed as I thought about my life.
"What about my job?" I asked.
"Someone will email your manager. Don't worry."
"But don't you--"
Were they going to log in as me, pretend to be me? Shit they had to write emails in the styles of other people now didn't they? All my accounts were auto-logged in. They could essentially be me in the digital world. Fuck.
The strong suit who was driving looked back at me in the rear view mirror.
"Calm down. We're not here to hurt you."
The charismatic suit smiled and then lit himself a .
