Yesterday, the daughter of good friends asked me to review her writing. Her mom had spoken to me about mentoring the daughter in writing.
When I read the piece, I was surprised at the complexity of the topic that the young girl was writing about. I could never articulate anything like that at her age. I kept thinking that if she kept writing, her skills will take off in less than a year. It took me a few years to get to where I am now and I know I started late.
When it comes to editing, I wasn't sure how much is too much when dealing with a child. I got exposure to feedback through toastmasters. But they are all adults in the club. How frank can you be when the person is still developing their skills and their self esteem.
I felt honored to be asked to mentor someone in a skill I developed on my own later in life. I understand how much of a skill it is when I read other people's work. I hope that I am able to be a positive mentor to this young talented writer.
