Steve

as reply to ten-gallon man

Somewhere off highway 66 there was a gas station attendant, Steve. He didn't care so much for work, but in a lot of ways it was a nice relief from normal life. He got to see other people, the cars they drove and make small talk.

"Hows it going Steve? Is Vegas worth the drive?"

"Yeah its great just stay away from those slots!"

He liked especially pretending to be someone else. Like this wasn't his only job, and like he didn't live with his girlfriend, and her mom in a small trailer like 20 minutes from the highway. He liked the truckers. Coming in on big rigs from all over the place. Talking about where they had been, always asking for more coffee.

That day it was probably about three, quiet, and hot the sun was high in the sky and these three guys just stop for gas, and one got a coffee. It was a man in an expensive suit. That suit he had never seen before, he had never really looked up suit prices, but it just looked fancy. The man didn't say a word except.

"Keep the change"

It was like 8 dollars of change. He looked at the car when he left, a bald guy up front and an old guy, was he on oxygen. They were dressed plainly almost like himself out of the uniform. Their car too was old. What was that man doing here, with them especially?
