Derek's dad was quiet in the car. Normally around this time they would turn the radio onto something he liked. The parent cartoons. Derek and his brother would always make faces, and pretend to be asleep when these came on. Sometimes he would be excited about the game. Or sometimes he would explain oh man I haven't heard this in awhile, and it would be a boring song with too much guitar, and sometimes Derek's dad would strum along in the air too it.
Today was different, Derek's dad just kept the music on they were listening too, and looked out the window. Derek's mom put her hand on his knee, and he moved it away.
Sorry. He said.
You okay? She asked?
Yeah, just a lot of work to do. He said.
You want to get pizza? She asked?
Derek perked up at this, but his dad just shrugged.
Derek said from the back that he'd like pizza. And Derek's dad just looked out the window.
His older brother agreed
Derek's mom ask Derek, what kind he'd like?
Just normal he said, pepperoni, but he was concerned. Everyone seemed to be thinking about something else.

Cal and Keith, felt like they had to tell Marianna something. They felt like her trajectory was taking her into danger. Barreling into something bad. But also Keith said, you can't just tell people that.
