Cal visited him in the common area. The supervisors still didn't assign him anything so Cal had nothing but time. On his desk he made it look like he was busy, spreading out a coffee cup, and scribbling notes. But non of it meant anything.
"Dude man we're kind of all gunna die" He told Keith, in one way trying to console him, in another way consoling himself. He shifted his weight on the couch, while Keith lay silent looking up at the ceiling.
Keith responded with a sigh.
"And like who cares about going back down, its chill here, you can work, you can have coffee. Lifes good." Cal said
Keith didn't lift his head. He wished he was back on the floor of the quality dairy. He wished he was able to smell that place again. Above all else.
"And man, your pretty old, like you've lived a good life" Cal said. "Its not like you didn't do anything, I mean you're in space, how many people can say they did that. "
Keith just laid there. Waiting, he didn't want Cal to go, and Cal knew that. So they just sat together Keith looking at the ceiling Cal looking out the window.
Usually this window would face but this time of day it was facing the rest of space. Looking at all the stars, all the other places, "sun sets and sunrises" Marianna would call them. Usually Cal didn't care about this, or would say something mockingly like " you know we're seeing the light from like a million years ago". But now he was just silent, and they just sat there in silence together.
