Warming Up

as reply to dead man in space

Cal prided himself always telling the truth. Even when sometimes he would regret it, or a friend would get hurt, at least he was being honest. With Keith he felt like he couldn't. Maybe its because he knew he was going to die, maybe because it didn't feel like his place. He thought about if he was in Marianna's shoes maybe he wouldn't want to know, like let it be, she's got a friend far away, maybe she's not even planning on a future. Cal thought about calling her, picking up the phone typing her name, and then deleting it. He wanted to tell someone see how they react. He was pacing now, worked up. He started counting. He used to do this when he was little, back then it was his cheat code to make time speed up, he hated his baby sitter. Sally, she'd smoke cigarettes, and tell him just play outside you don't need to come in, just go play with the kids. He just wanted to be alone, so he'd get lost in counting, all the way up to a hundred and even a thousand a few times. Once he stopped his mom would be there, or it would be time to eat lunch. He just had to count.

=====

Marianna, had just finished blow drying her wet clothes. She lit a few candles, cheap heat she thought, and then turned on the oven. After work she didn't feel like cooking so she usually just ate frozen pizzas. She bargained with herself that she was also heating the house, so thats good too. She got always just cheese, sometimes she would add her own toppings, most times thats all she would have was cheese. She laid on the floor breathing a bit heavy after the walk and the stairs and the cold. She did this almost every night, it was like 10 minutes for the oven to warm up so like ten minutes she also did, getting rid of everything in the real world, it was almost time to call Keith. The buzzer rang on the oven.
