Doug 19: library

as reply to Doug 18: Up all Night

"We have never been modern."

Were the words looping through his head as he walked down the aisles. He liked coming here at night. The fifth floor of the University library.

He'd been out of school for over ten years now. But he looked young enough to fit in here at night. He could be seen as a grad student.

In another life he would've gone to grad school. If he had finished college that's probably what he would've done. It would mean he would be dead broke for years, but he was broke for years anyway so why would that matter?

The school year had just started. The kids were back in town. Thus the library was back on its 24/7 schedule. In the summer he missed walking down these aisles. They didn't feel the same during the daytime.

When he spent nights in the library, he woke up just in time for his calls with the cousin. He'd often take the call with dry toast. The only thing appetizing about the meal the warm melting butter. After the call he would shower and then head out for a proper meal. Something with protein and a lot of fat.

He still had no clue what Doug was up to. He'd cancelled their call earlier. The first time they'd not called each other in months. Before coming to the library he had thought Doug was calling him, but his eyes were imagining things.

He had even picked up the phone and began talking. It was seconds before he realized he was hallucinating it. He wasn't tired though. So he had gone out and headed to the library.
