James didn't mind

as reply to another day, another dollar

James before all this had been pretty smart, top of his class, or pretty close. And those kids who were top had all the fucking help in world, extra classes, private tutors, and they didn't have to work.  He wanted to do important things, although most of the time after school he just took care of his sisters. His mom told him "Family is the most important thing." James face reddened when she said this. When they were old enough to stay home alone he got a job, then a car, then he could do things. A lot of time, he drove out to the park, sometimes if he was lucky his friends would leave some weed. Which he kept under the coin holder, tucked away. He'd take one puff, and then another just to relax. He felt like he was on a hammock somewhere, the breeze would move the trees making it sound like a stadium.

He did that once a week if he was lucky.

Big Joe worked at the restaurant, in the back, one time he asked him if he could bum a lighter, and James forgot to give it back.

The next day Big Joe said now you owe me, meet me after work.

The money was better, and faster, James didn't mind.
