Way Home

as reply to the day he broke

He played it off on the boat.

Kept repeating “I needed a new one anyway!”

He was laughing and taking selfies. Two friends were with him and his wife. All retired and this was the first part of their trip. He couldn’t spoil it.

He was sad though, and his head wet, reminded him he was bald. His wife said in her normal jovial way.

“It’s like those waterproof jackets just falls right off.”

And with that she patted his head. Then kissed the top of it. Taking his glasses and wiping them with a micro fiber cloth.

Don’t worry we’ll be home soon.

Their other friends didn’t notice, but she could tell something changed.

They went to Raman place, the soup was hot steaming his glasses. Re warming him, and lifting their spirits, but not his.

When they said goodbye they walked back through Central Park arm and arm.

“Tell me what’s going on?”

“Nothing I just really liked that hat.”

“No like what’s really going on? “

He paused, stopping walking. “I don’t feel like I am happy anymore. It’s no one’s fault, I just that hat reminded me of something.”

“You don’t have to be happy all the time.”
She said.

They kept walking arm and arm in silence all the way home.
