Cell phones with speed-dial and certainly smartphones have ushered in the era of not needing to remember any phone numbers.
"But what if you lose your iPhone?" Perish the thought! I have my contacts backed up to iCloud so I still have them on my iPad.
"But what if you lose your iPad?" Again, shame on you for putting such a terrible thought out into the world. I can still get contacts on my MacBook.
"But what if someone steals your MacBook?" Boy, you really have a negative view of the world, don't you? I can still get my contacts on my iMac.
"But what if someone breaks into your house, hits you over the head with a sock full of pennies, and steals your iMac?" What is wrong with you?? So basically you are imagining a scenario where somehow all my devices are gone? I'd just buy them again and sync up to iCloud.
"But what if a natural disaster or terrorist attack destroys the data centers where the iCloud data are stored?" You may need professional help. I have a hard copy back-up of all my important papers including contacts in a fire-proof safe.

I think in case of such a large disaster that easy access to the internet is hard, you probably can’t call anyone anyway.
Also I got a great analog backup. The Red Cross. It is almost everywhere in the world and I’m sure I could talk to them to get me a connection back home, at least that is what I’ve read and heard in one of the many courses :)
