Stripe is an outlier. It powers a large portion of payments on the internet, including Shopy. Stripe isn't public yet, having a seat on Stripe's cap table is a privilege reserved for those who are called privileged by those who are privileged.
Something interesting happened recently. Shopify invested $300M plus in Stripe. The interesting part is, Stripe is an investor in Fast. Shopify, not too long ago, introduced a product that does the same thing Fast does.
Shopify investing in Stripe is understandable. Stripe allowing them is what I don't get.

Stripe allowing Shopify to invest is even understandable. Shopify accounts for a large chunk of Stripe revenues about %30 I heard. It happens in the movie industry too. By the second season of 24, Kiefer Sutherland (Jack Bauer) became an Executive Producer on the same show. Tom Hiddlestone (Loki) is also a producer of the Marvel show Loki. Having your biggest player/actor as your investor is okay. It signals commitment beyond professional duties.
But why would Stripe invest in Fast and in less than a year accept investment from Shopify who owns Shop Pay. What's the rationale? What happened?

I think all of this makes sense to me. Both of them think they can take a good stab at that functionality... why not go for it? In the end they know that they're aligned whoever wins.
