There's something about starting something when you don't need to. 

Starting a side project when you don't need to

Interviewing for jobs when you don't need to.

Exercising when you don't need to.

Doing things when you don't need to makes for ease in the long term. And sometimes it's the exposure to an alternate reality that galvanises our mind to reach for more.

But blimey, doing things when you don't need to requires lots of discipline or a high amount of reckless obsession.

But whichever path leads you there, doing things when you need to is a good mental hook to optimize for.
