Today, I completed the 2nd draft of my piece for Medium challenge.
It is at 1900 words right now. That is after I edited away a lot of content. It is so hard to remove things but I know I have to keep editing out over 1000 words.
This phase is mostly deciding which piece of information is essential to the piece. There is so much more I want to say but I have to fight that urge.
Once I am happy with the content, I will work on the flow. One paragraph has to follow another seamlessly. This is while keeping a hook at the start, a conflict in the middle and a potential twist and great ending so the story sticks in the mind of the reader. This phase is critical and most difficult to execute for me.
Once that is complete, I will go towards grammar, punctuation and making the sentences short and simple. I still hope to inject some humor in there if I can. Since the subject matter is serious, some humor could help.
After that, I will read my piece aloud and record myself. Then I will listen to my recording to see where things sound weird or I feel bored.
Then a final edit to make sure the piece is good to go.
And on Aug 23, I will publish and share the link here as well.
6 days to go. A lot to do.
