New music

When is new music, new music? I guess it is when I hear it for the first time, not necessarily when it is released. My music tastes are a bit stuck in the past. I love the songs I grew up with from the 60s and 70s. So it is not uncommon for me to have The Eagles, Beatles, or Dylan on high rotation. What I don't do very often is seek out new music.

It's not that there is any shortage of music to listen to, as my music streaming service has more new music than I can listen to. Getting access to as much as you need has never been easier.

I recently started listening to Eskimo Joe, an alternative rock band from Fremantle in Western Australia. Eskimo Joe is not a new band, having been around since 1997, and their last album release was in 2013. So you can't classify them as new music. But to me, they are new music, and I am quite enjoying it.

There are seventy million tracks on Spotify, so there has to be something new to listen to. So it's time to ditch the oldies and spend more time listening to new music.
I'd recommend the movie "Yesterday" on Netflix. A supernatural event makes The Beatles disappear from world history, except for a struggling musician who can still remember their music. Fun little movie and I guess the thing that struck me most was how, like you say, if you never heard it before, it's new music whenever you do hear it.

I've been on the only-listen-to-oldies habit for about four or five years now. Still not ready to actively seek new music.

You  know what you like, you know there's more than you'll ever get listen to even knowing what you like, so you never really need to update. Besides, when you hear new music all you can say is, "it's getting worse by the year, why, back in my day, they used to make real music!"
