Subscriptions

I was doing a tally of the subscriptions I pay for while I was doing my taxes. I knew most of the services and made a conscious decision to continue or to stop. The ones that threw me off and I see myself spending more than I am comfortable with are the yearly subscriptions.

For some reason, the monthly ones are recurring frequently so it is easy to make a decision about utility. But for the yearly ones, it is a tougher decision making process. Which makes it beneficial to the service provider due to analysis paralysis.

I tried to think about the first time I came across a yearly subscription. I believe it was good old Amazon with their prime service. I wouldn't be surprised if they based it on intense analysis of benefit to the company. They do provide a lot for the prime service and most people I know feel ok about the yearly subscription. Now the audible service also has a yearly discounted offer. Some of the other services that offer the yearly membership are:

- Costco/Sams clubs type of groceries
- Instacard delivery service
- Masterclass membership
- Blinkist
- Coursera.com

I think a lot of businesses are shifting to the yearly model due to the success over monthly models. I personally have become more aware of my yearly memberships but still strugle with the yearly ones. So I understand the appeal to businesses.
That's funny. I always prefer to pay by the year. don't want to think about it and often i get a discount.

I think if i were to make something that i charged for i would like to imagine that i only charge a one time fee. but that seems kind of unsustainable in software.
