The Medium Writing Challenge team made an announcement about the writing competition from last month.
Apparently they are overwhelmed with the volume of submissions for the challenge. Over 10,000 I believe is what people have mentioned.
I feel for the judges that signed up for this competition. It is just too many posts to have to read, objectively judge and decide a single winner out of. I find that I can't read more than a couple of posts at a time before I get tired. And a lot of the posts are over 1000 words. If it were up to me, I would have made the competition just 200 words or less - with lesser being given more points.
I still suspect that AI would likely be used to filter out some posts before they even reach the judges. There was a lot of talk of distribution being a criteria - which made me very happy. But I suspect that there will be even more AI used to reduce the volume that the judges will read to a few hundred.
Regardless, I am still staying optimistic and pushing on with my other plans. The announcement from Medium stated that they expect to have the results in early Oct. It just may end up being on Oct 3rd.
