When We Were Young - Part 1

It was a thing then.
Pen Pals.

I don't remember when I found out about it but I was curious. Right after high school, I had a few months of break before the school leaving exam results are announced nationwide. And after that, the University placement. So there was nothing else for me to do.

I would spend hours listening to the BBC or VOA on the radio. A few shows would have options to request music and pen pals if selected. So I applied to about 4 of these shows. I got selected in two of them.

I remember the time when I heard my name for the first time on BBC radio. They called my name and I screamed. I ran from my parents bedroom - which was where the radio was kept, to the living room to brag about my victory. In the process, I scraped my arms on the door  sockets and blood was everywhere. That still didn't affect my excitement at having my name called. I still have the mark on my arm to remind me of this day.

Following that show, I got about 50 or so pay pals from all over the world. It was one of the most interesting thing to read hand written letters from strangers from around the world - interested in the same thing I was. I had no idea how far where that would lead me.

To be continued....
Ohhh wow. I've had pen pals as well but never to this amount. Reading about pen pals is making me like the idea of having pen pals. These days i have them via email mostly.

OH NO. You shouldn't have told me. I want to remember it as a handwritten letter. Actually, that's what it was. You just think it was an email.
