It was before the match. An important one.
And the coach was giving a speech. A very inspirational one.
Many of the players had moist eyes. All of them had that stare. The kind of focus where you knew they weren't paying attention to anything else but what was going on there. A fellowship of coaches and players. Ready to go and fucking win the championship.
When the speech ended with a bang the players all stood up and pounded each others' chests. All the coaches and trainers yelled along with them, shouting things like "go get em!"
"WHO ARE WE?"
They yelled their team name.
"WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO?"
"WIN!!!!!"
However a few seconds later when it was time to leave the locker room and head out to the field, the players wouldn't go out. They were too excited. Too inspired. They wanted more.
So they asked for another motivational speech. The head coach appeared a bit confused but he decided to indulge. He asked for the assistant trainer -- who was a seasoned pro now just getting into coaching -- to give a speech. The speech inspired the team again. Got them pumping their chests. Now it was time to head out to the field. AND WIN!
"WHO ARE WE?"
They yelled their team name.
"WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO?"
"WIN!!!!!"
"NOW LET'S GO OUT THERE AND SHOW EM WHAT WE MADE OF!" the headcoach yelled while pointing to the exit.
But the players did not leave. They continued jumping up and down, HOOTING and WOOTING.
"ONE MORE SPEECH! ONE MORE SPEECH! MORE INSPIRATION!"
